1. Remote Desktop

   My desktop/production computer and my media/home theater computer are back to back. Sure I could NFS my music onto the desktop computer and control it all locally (or get up and walk around like I have been doing), but instead I decided to play with VNC and Remote Desktop Connection (kRDC). It is set up in the system settings under sharing and when you open a connection I have to run around to the other computer to accept the connection. But now I have a view of and control over my other computer in a window on this computer. I am new to this and do not yet have a full understanding of the features, but it was very intuitive to set up. It won’t stream video but it is very rewarding for controlling music and other processes on the other machine.

2. ProFTD Site

   On my server I was running a GnuMP3 server to listen to my music remotely and share tracks with my friends. However, I soon found that my upstream connection is too slow for streaming. Since I have to download the tracks anyways I decided to set up an FTP site for a cleaner look and speedier connection. I started with vsftpd, and have since moved on to ProFTP. I have run into difficulty downloading from the FTP site, and I believe it is because the tracks are an NFS mount on the server and are owned by a different user. I will be trying a few things but I’m sure it’s easily worked around.
