Opera 9

October 24th, 2006 · 3 Comments

My websurfing experience had not been great on the Edgy PPC machine. Firefox 2.0 was crashing, and konqueror was slow and not getting the support it should on sites. After hearing so many great things about Opera 9, I thought I would give it a try and I’m glad I did.

First, the Opera site is a joy is deal with. Even if you want the support from a repository, I recommend downloading it from the site as well just for the experience. One way to add it to your repository is to add the following lines to the bottom of your /etc/apt/sources.list file USE AT YOUR OWN RISK:

# The Opera browser (packages)
deb http://deb.opera.com/opera etch non-free

There are also other repositories available that have the opera packages and others in them.

I know everyone says that Konqueror is the fastest browser out there — and i love Konqueror don’t get me wrong — but I have always found it to be rather slow. Opera 9, on my system, is the fastest browser I’ve tried and it’s full functional. Well, full functional is more than an understatement. The feature list is not only an impressive read but it really lives up to it. There are also a lot of subtile features that aren’t mentioned that really make it quite a productive browser to use.

I’ve been a die hard FireFox supporter for years and I had tried Opera before and found nothing special. Whatever you’re preconceived notions are about it put them in the back of your mind and just try it. I think you’ll be surprised.

I’m glad you enjoyed using Opera. You are totally right about dropping preconveived notions about browsers. Opera is fast, lightweight and feature-filled. It’s not a browser, it’s an “Internet-Suite”.

Heh, I remember the times when Netscape was the ‘Internet Suite’. Ever since the word has made me shudder.
