When i bought my PII I learned the joys of old hardware. Its particularly fun component was an ATI RageII card. Needless to say that machine lacks a desktop environment. I have also been playing with an old Thinkpad that was given to me after it had a run in with some cheery coke. It’s been a slow project but I think that — like the PII — i will eventually be able to get some use out of it.
I was recently given a PI that was put together by Digital (DEC) many moons ago. It has a blazing 32Mb of RAM, and a lot of soul. I’ve been getting better at booting from a non-bootable CD-ROM (sbootmgr) but I think this one is going to be a challenge. The construction of the box is awesome; if nothing else DEC could put together a computer.
The big plan is to put another NIC card in it and set it up as a router. I’d be interested in a mini-distro that just functions as a router/firewall and would run the system headless. My modem router combo now can’t do DNS to save its life. Updates and possible pictures to follow.
