There are pros and cons to hosting a blog yourself or letting WordPress do it. One of the benefits of a blog.wordpress.com account is they take care of updates and cool plug-ins for you…seamlessly. When I made the decision to host on my own there were a few of these plug-ins that I just couldn’t live without. Luckily, they are quite easy to maintain on my own:
- Automattic Stats
This basically gives you exactly the same statistics functionality as the hosted account - WP-ContactForm
An easy way to add to your blog a contact form for people to send you emails while you remain anonymous (More details can be found at their Homepage) UPDATE: Use the Homepage to download the most recent version of the plug-in. The WP site is out of date. - Random Redirect
Because….well why not?
Luckily, since I am hosting this blog on Dreamhost they already provided me with wp-cache, Akismet, podPress, WP-FLV, and a ton of great themes to choose from with widgets already enabled.
It was pretty easy and quick to get my WordPress install looking professional and feeling usable.
UPDATE:
- Open Web Analytics
This is an analytics program that is native to your site rather than using the wordpress.com api. It is really a slick app and has many configurable options such as using the Google Maps API for geolocation of your visitors.
