Linux on the iMac, part II

October 12th, 2006 · No Comments

Success is so sweet when followed by anxiety. Linux is up and running on the iMac making my lan completely linux. Here’s what I did:

First I tried an install of Suse 10.1 (open). I was a little disapointed to see it was 5 disks — I admire a distro that gets it done in one — and since I was just trying it out on my system I opted for net install. How this works is you download a boot disk, then find a mirror serving the distro, find it’s IP address, and input the IP and the directory path on the server when you boot off the small boot disk. I got it working, but it took many hours to download what amounted to disk one of the installation so I decided to abort.

Aborting the install threw the computer into fits. For a while things were at a stand still where I couldn’t even get the computer to boot from a cd or log into the partially installed os. Yaboot would load before I could get the computer to boot from CD. Going back and using the wireless keyboard for some reason allowed a boot from CD.

Thanks to a helpful comment on my last post, I tried the Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft live CD with great success. The live cd worked brilliantly, the install took a half hour, and so far everything is working fine. The only abnormality is ubuntu boot screen (not the gnome boot screen) is a little funky looking. For now I don’t think I will try to install KDE; I have a kubuntu machine already and wouldn’t mind learning more about GNOME.

I will continue to post updates as I try to get my bluetooth keyboard to work, and learn more about the new features Edgy Eft has to offer.
