Konqueror in Gnome

May 5th, 2007 · No Comments

As far as I’m concerned, Konqueror is a killer app: as a file browser and as a quick and dirty web browser. As I’m moving philosophically and actually from Ubuntu to Debian I have been integrating my favorite KDE apps into my Gnome desktop and am happy with hybrid results.

  • apt-get install konqueror
  • From the Applications -> Internet menu right click on Konqueror and Add this launcher to panel
  • On the panel right click on Konqueror and open Properties
  • The default is to launch Konqueror as a web browser. To have it open as a file manager change the Command: field to read kfmclient openProfile filemanagement
  • Now use the panel launcher to open Konqueror. It defaults to an icon view. Go to View->View Mode->Tree View
  • To make sure Konqueror launches with this view every time: Go to Settings->Save View Profile “File Management”… and click Save.

Now every time you click on Konqueror in the launcher panel you will quickly have all the features and benefits of managing your files and everything else on your computer that comes with Konqueror.

Other killer KDE apps I have integrated into my Gnome Desktop:

  • Amarok - Music, iPod, Podcast Management (iTunes killer)
  • k3b - CD/DVD burning
  • kTorrent - torrent downloading, searching, and management

…to name a few. A desktop environment is a facilitator, don’t feel constrained by it.
