Export Blogroll from wordpress.com

June 7th, 2007 · 2 Comments

I am in the process of moving this blog to my own server (sorry guys…adsense callin’). In the administrative pages for 1isa2isb.wordpress.com there is an easy way to export all of your content (Manage -> Export) but not an obvious way to export your Blogroll. There is a link for importing (Blogroll -> Import Links) but none for exporting. I like my Blogroll and have spent some time on it, so I don’t want to have to recreate it by hand. You don’t have to and this is how:

  1. Go to http://blogname.wordpress.com/wp-links-opml.php using your url bar
  2. Use your browser’s Save page as… function and change the files extension from .php to .xml
  3. In the administrative page of your new blog go to Blogroll -> Import Links and select the .xml file you just saved

If you want to do this from non-wordpress-hosted blogs, check out this forum post about how to do it.

UPDATE:

If you export your links this way they will no longer be associated with any categories so you will still need to go through and update that….along with their descriptions and XFN information.

TIP:

Before you export your content (which includes your categories) make sure none of your categories have a & in them. If they do, there will be an identical category created with that name for every post that is associated with the category. Take a second now to change any & to and or - so that you won’t have to deal with the hassle later.
