I upgraded my intel machine to Kubuntu Edgy Eft today. The process was long but smooth. i had been messing with my sources.list file for a while now and kind of wanted to start fresh, so i used the one from Ubuntu Guide. Everything worked well and it booted like a champ as if nothing had changed.
During the installation setup stage it asked me a few times if i’d like to keep current config files or use the new ones. I choose defaults on everything but the exports.conf file because i wasn’t thrilled with my nfs export configurations to begin with and there were some interesting comments in there about new versions of NFS.
Edgy is noticably faster Dapper in every way that i’ve tried so far. I haven’t done extensive testing yet, but everything that did work still works. In my opinion, it’s ready for the big times.
A couple things i’ve been trying now that I have Edgy on my media machine:
- 3ddesktop
I’ve had a couple successful and a couple failed attempts at compiz/xgl and maybe i’ll pursue that further. I did grab the 3ddesktop package and play around with it a bit. I didn’t notice any system drain and it looks pretty great. There is a good howto in the ubuntu wiki that supplements the README file. The only problem I have been having is with keybindings. It kind of takes some of the fun out of the program if you have to go to the command line first to run it. - MythTV 0.20
The original purpose of this machine was to run MythTV, and it’s taken me almost eleven months to realize that goal. With the new 0.20 packages I finally got MythTV to play broadcast HD content on my computer. I am still having trouble with getting all the stations (a atsc/ntsc conflict I think) and I haven’t tried recording yet, but I was very pleased to finally put that HD card to work. Up until now i have been watching SD content with KdeTV. Oh happy day!
